Pre-Game Breakdown: Tiger-Cats at Alouettes

The Tiger-Cats visit Pervical Molson Memorial Stadium to take on the Montreal Alouettes on Sunday at 1 p.m. (AM900 CHML / TSN / ESPN). Sunday  afternoon’s game is a critical one for both sides, as the winner will move into a tie for first place in the East Division.

In week 10, Hamilton held on to a 13-12 win over the East Division leader, the Toronto Argonauts, by picking off Ricky Ray in the closing minutes, while Montreal also got back into the win column with a 20-10 win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:

DB Brandon Stewart: Defensive back Brandon Stewart currently ranks second on the Ticats in defensive tackles with 32. Last week versus Toronto in the Labour Day Classic, Stewart led the defence with six defensive stops. In the four of his last five starts, he has compiled 5+ tackles.

DE Antonio Coleman: Last week, Ticats defensive end Antonio Coleman showed his ability to get into the backfield with a pair of sacks in the Black and Gold’s Labour Day victory. In just four starts with the Tiger-Cats, Coleman has registered three defensive tackles and three quarterback sacks.

 

NEWS AND NOTES:

  • Last week, the Tiger-Cats held Toronto to just 146 net yards (including just 57 in the second half). Hamilton last held an opponent under 150 yards on October 7, 2000 (and that was also Toronto who gained just 135 yards).  Toronto managed just 9 first downs last week against the Ticats defence. It is only the second time in the last 20 years that Hamilton has held an opponent to single digit first downs.
  • The Tiger-Cats are #2 in the CFL in passing at 262.3 yards per game and over the last 3 contests have averaged 322 yards (most of any team).
  • Linebacker Marc Beswick currently ranks second all-time in Ticats history for special teams tackles with 115. Beswick needs seven special teams tackles to surpass Rob Hitchcock (122) and become the club’s all-time leader.
  • Sunday’s game matches the league’s youngest team, the Ticats (average of 26.5 years of age), with the CFL’s oldest club, Montreal (average of 28.0). Montreal has 17 players 30 years or older, Hamilton has six.
  • Ticats linebacker Eric Harris is currently tied for second in the CFL in special teams tackles with 11.
  • On Sunday in Montreal, Ticats defensive tackle Ted Laurent will make his 40th career start.
