The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has signed four Canadian defensive linemen, including 2014 CFL Draft picks Mathieu Girard, Stephen Mawa and Martin Pesek, as well as national defensive end Everton Williams.
Girard, a 6-4, 275-pound, native of Montreal, Quebec, finished his CIS career with a total of 78 defensive tackles, 23 tackles for a loss, 20 quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries at the University of Montreal. The Ticats 52nd overall pick inthe 2014 CFL Draft played an integral part of the Carabins 2014 Vanier Cup Championship, blocking McMaster’s 31-yard field goal attempt in the dying seconds of the game.
Mawa, selected by the Tiger-Cats in the fifth round (53rd overall) spent two seasons at UBC after transferring from Santa Monica Junior College. The Port Coquitland, British Columbia native registered 28.5 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and eight quarterback sacks with the Thunderbirds.
Pesek recorded 63.5 defensive tackles, 31.5 tackles for a loss and 17 sacks in five seasons at Acadia. The Ticats 62nd overall pick in 2014 attended training camp with the team last season prior to electing to return to school for his final year of CIS eligibility.
Williams, a 6-6, 285-pound, native of Toronto, Ontario, played four seasons at the University of Toronto. In 27 games with the Varsity Blues, he registered 64.5 defensive tackles, nine tackles for a loss, 4.5 quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
