The belairdirect Protector of the Game program has officially launched for the 2015 season. Because belairdirect is all about protecting their customers, the program awards one player every single game of the season for their on-field efforts in protection.
Players may be awarded for any of the following forms of on-field protection:
- An offensive lineman who keeps the quarterback on his feet for the duration of the game or springs a running back with a big block in the run game
- A running back who makes a key blitz pick-up to give the quarterback more time
- A defender who protects the Ticats’ end-zone with a key tackle or interception
- A ball-carrier who protects the ball from the defender with some strong hands
After each game, three players who fit the above criteria will be nominated for the award by the Ticats TV Live panel, at which point the process enters the fans’ hands.
Once the three players are nominated, fans are encouraged to vote for the most deserving player of the award on belairdirect’s website, with the opportunity to vote once each day for the duration of the week.
In Week One, Johnny Sears Jr. was the Protector of the Game in his first career game as a Ticats player. Sears picked off Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell twice in the game, returning one for a 75-yard touchdown.
Week Two’s Protector of the Game was receiver Bakari Grant, who earned the award on the back of an impressive performance, including an exceptional display of protecting the ball despite taking some big hits.
