The Canadian Football League announced today that Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeff Mathews has been named one of the Shaw CFL Top Performers for Week 16.
In just his second CFL start, Mathews threw his first-three touchdown passes and completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 385 yards in Friday’s 30-15 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Tim Hortons Field. At 5:58 of the second quarter, Mathews registered his first-career CFL touchdown pass on a nine-yard strike to receiver Luke Tasker. His third touchdown was the CFL’s longest play from scrimmage this season when he connected with receiver Terrell Sinkfield Jr. for an 87-yard completion at 8:26 of the third quarter. He also tacked on 27 rushing yards on three attempts in the game.
The native of Camarillo, California leads the Tiger-Cats with six rushing touchdowns this season and has now completed 64.7 percent of his passes (55-of-85) for 787 yards and three touchdowns.
Mathews, who finished second in voting, joins Toronto’s Trevor Harris (first) and B.C.’s Emmanuel Arceneaux (third) as this week’s Shaw CFL Top Performers. The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
