The Canadian Football League announced Tuesday that Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has been named the Shaw CFL Top Performer for Week 5.
Masoli, 27, completed 31 passes on 38 attempts for 391 yards with three passing touchdowns, including a CFL record of 23-consecutive pass completions to start the second half in Hamilton’s 37-31 come-from-behind road win over the Edmonton Eskimos on July 23. The 25-point deficit that the Tiger-Cats overcame marked the largest comeback victory in franchise history and was tied for sixth largest in CFL history. In his sixth CFL season, the 5-10, 228-pound native of San Francisco, California, has started at quarterback in all five of the Tiger-Cats games and ranks second in the league in passing yards (1,532), second in pass completions (132), and tied for fourth in passing touchdowns (8).
The University of Mississippi product dressed in six regular season games for the Tiger-Cats in 2015, seeing action in the final game on November 7 at Ottawa. Masoli also started both of Tiger-Cats playoff games in 2015, including the Eastern Semi-Final versus Toronto and the Eastern Final at Ottawa. He was acquired by the Tiger-Cats along with Simoni Lawrence and Greg Wojt from Edmonton in exchange for Nathan Kanya and the rights to Carson Rockhill on February 5, 2013.
Saskatchewan’s Naaman Roosevelt and Edmonton’s Mike Reilly, second and third in voting, respectively, join Masoli as this week’s Shaw CFL Top Performers. The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
