The Canadian Football League announced Tuesday that Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Zach Collaros has been named a Shaw CFL Top Performer for Week 9.
Collaros, 27, completed 23 passes on 30 attempts for 381 yards with a career-high five passing touchdowns in Hamilton’s 53-7 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Tim Hortons Field on August 20. The game marked just his second start this season after recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered on September 19, 2015. The University of Cincinnati product signed a contract extension with the Tiger-Cats on June 20, 2016 that will keep him in Hamilton through the 2018 season.
In 2015, Collaros started 12 regular season games, completing 252 of 359 passing attempts (70.2%) and posting career highs in passing yards (3,376) yards and touchdowns (25), while rushing 28 times for 164 yards and one touchdown. The 6-0, 222-pound native of Steubenville, Ohio set the Tiger-Cats franchise record for completion percentage in a single season, while earning Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Month honours (August – 1st place), and was a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week three times (Week 8 – 2nd place, Week 9 – 2nd place, Week 11 – 1st place). At the time of the injury, Collaros was leading the CFL in passing yards, touchdown passes and quarterback rating (113.7), and was second in completion percentage.
Collaros, who finished second in voting, joins Montreal’s Kevin Glenn and Edmonton’s Patrick Watkins, first and third in voting, respectively, as this week’s Shaw CFL Top Performers. The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
Tiger-Cats named Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week this season:
Simoni Lawrence – Week 1 (1st)
Adrian Tracy – Week 4 (1st)
Jeremiah Masoli – Week 5 (1st)
Zach Collaros – Week 9 (2nd)
