The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Wednesday that the football club has signed international free agent defensive back V’Angelo Bentley (vee-AN-juh-loh) to a practice roster agreement.
Bentley, 22, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the National Football League’s New England Patriots on May 6, 2016. He attended training camp with the team and was released on August 22.
The 5-10, 190-pound native of Cleveland, Ohio, played in 46 career games (32 starts) at the University of Illinois from 2012 to 2015, registering 132 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, 11 passes defended, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. Bentley also served as the primary kick and punt returner during his tenure at Illinois. He finished as the school’s kick return yardage record holder, posting 1,860 yards on 86 returns with one touchdown, and adding 50 punt returns for 550 yards and an additional touchdown. Bentley is the only player in Illinois history with at least one kick return, punt return, interception return and fumble return for a touchdown.
The Tiger-Cats have also placed national wide receiver Matt Coates on the six-game injured list, and moved national wide receiver Mike Jones from the practice roster to the active roster.
