The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Monday that the football club has signed national free agent linebackers Akeem Whonder and Leon Cenerini.
Whonder, 28, signed with the Tiger-Cats earlier this season on September 6 and served on the practice roster before being released on September 14. The 5-11, 224-pound linebacker also attended mini-camp with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2017. The native of Mississauga, Ontario, previously spent time in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts (2015-16) and Calgary Stampeders (2014). Whonder played in 37 career collegiate games over five seasons for the Windsor Lancers, registering 175 defensive tackles, eight quarterback sacks, one interception, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
Cenerini, 22, played five seasons (2013-2017) at Carleton University. The 5-9, 212-pound linebacker suited up in 39 career games for the Ravens, registering 303 total tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and two pass breakups. A native of La Salle, Manitoba, Cenerini broke Carleton’s career tackles record and was named an OUA All-Star in 2016.
