Jotted: The Year Of The Fullback

As Ticats training camp progresses, so does the offence. In previous practices, we have seen interchangeable players move around the offensive front and defensive players moving to the backfield. Wednesday’s practice was no different as June Jones continues to tweak and alter his roster.
The battering rams are back:
There is no question that the Fullback position has become less and less popular across football in recent years. But the resurgence of this once cornerstone position has been resuscitated in Hamilton. Coach June Jones has made it a mission of sorts to try and incorporate the versatility of a Fullback into his offence. Wednesday’s practice saw this incorporation in Brett Wade and Jack McEwen. Both former defensive tackles have bounced all around the Ticats packages this training camp and are now reported to be at the forefront of Jones’ ideology of making players “swiss army knives”. Jones noted that “I’m going to bring them (Wade and McEwen) over and start teaching them footwork stuff too because of the pass protection they provide”. Both Wade and McEwen bring with them blocking power that can make large holes for running backs to gain positive yards.

McKnight In Shining Armour:
His voice has carried from sideline to sideline at Ron Joyce Stadium this week as offensive line coach Dennis McKnight is not going light on his platoon. His strict view of exactly what he wants of his personnel this season shows just how little room players have to mess up this season. With an offensive line being undeniably crucial to a successful team, a strict coach is exactly what you need. They say games are won and lost in the trenches and McKnight is looking to win every single snap of every single game.
