As the weekend begins, fans across Hamilton headed to Ron Joyce Stadium to see their beloved Hamilton Tiger-Cats. As the team’s first preseason game is a matter of days away, fundamental and schematic lessons continue to be taught.
Super Special Teams:
The past two days at training camp have seen the Tiger-Cats bring the development of special teams to the forefront. Coach June Jones set aside time in practice to work on kick returns and field goals, showing that every area of this team is being worked on. Though special teams are a sometimes underrated attribution to a team, the ability to steal some points with a field goal or pin their opponent within their own 15-yard line is a luxury this team is looking to use. Former Toronto Argonauts kicker, Lirim Hajrullahu, is set to begin his first season as a Tiger-Cat. Making 47 of 58 field goals on the year, Hamilton is looking to use his consistency as a weapon to tack some extra points on the board.
Next Man In
Last year’s combination of Whitlock, Neill, Coleman, Capicciotti and Tracy did a number on the CFL. But as defensive lineman Davon Coleman turns the page with the Tiger-Cats, a spot is now free on the starting defensive line. Coleman, 27, played in 17 games with the Tiger-Cats last season, registering 41 defensive tackles, five quarterback sacks, 13 quarterback pressures, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, two pass knockdowns and one blocked field goal. With the surplus of talent coming into this season’s training camp, selecting a new starting defensive tackle will be easier than in previous years.
