Tiger-cats And Stelco Announce Enhanced High School Mentorship Program

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Wednesday, a revamped High-School Mentorship Program, presented by Stelco.

As part of the ninth season of the High School Mentorship Program, Ticats players will visit high schools in the local Hamilton area for practices and games during the 2022 season. The players will assist coaches and students in drills as well as provide guidance to the students both on and off the football field.

“We’re honoured to be able to give back to our community in such a meaningful way,” said Courtney Stephen, Director of Community Partnerships, Hamilton Sports Group. “Our players have jumped at the opportunity to mentor Hamilton’s youth and we’re incredibly thankful that our partners at Stelco have helped make this all possible.”

Stelco has contributed $10,000 to the program in the form of five $2,000 bursaries which will be awarded to local high school students who are in their final year.

“Having some of the most recognizable faces in our community mentor students across Hamilton is a fantastic way to engage with youth and instill strong values of leadership and service,” stated Trevor Harris, Vice President Corporate Affairs for Stelco. “We are very excited about the new bursary program which will recognize those who exemplify the true spirit of our community and will expand the opportunity for recipients to pursue further education and growth.”

The Chuck Ealey Black & Gold Award will be awarded to Black student-athletes that exemplify the undefeated spirit of its namesake through commitment, equity, community, respect and sportsmanship. Ealey spent parts of three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1972-74), where he became the first black quarterback to win a Grey Cup in 1972, capping off a season in which he was named Grey Cup MVP and the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie. The Made in the Hammer Award will be given to the student-athletes that embody Hamilton Sports Group and Stelco’s values of commitment, leadership, community service, sportsmanship and a heart of steel. Click here for more details.
