HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats lost a closely contested matchup to the Montreal Alouettes 25-22 in the 2023 preseason finale.

Following Bo Levi Mitchell’s razor-sharp debut in the Ticats’ 27-22 win over the Toronto Argonauts last week, quarterbacking duties were turned over to veteran Matt Shiltz and rookie pivot Taylor Powell.

Shiltz put on a show in the first half, completing 12 of 16 passes (75.0%) for 162 yards (10.1 yards per attempt) two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Similar to last week, with Mitchell throwing two incompletions before carving up the Argos defence, Shiltz’s first three passes fell incomplete vs. the Alouettes before closing the game out 12 of 13.

In addition to his production through the air, Shiltz added a 51-yard run on the ground—producing 213 total yards of offence in just two quarters of action.

Ten different Ticats caught passes, with nine notching multiple receptions. Wide receiver Terry Godwin led Hamilton in receiving yards with 77, averaging 25.7 yards per reception and hauling in a 21-yard touchdown reception from Shiltz.

Hamilton’s defence held both Cody Fajardo (seven of 14) and Caleb Evans (also seven of 14) to a 50.0% completion-percentage.

Nyles Pinckney (five), Tyrone Hill Jr. (four) and Cortez Davis (three) were the team’s leaders in defensive tackles.
