CFL Announces Game Changes for 2026 and 2027

FBO-CFL-TiCats-Camp 20230514

The Canadian Football League (CFL) today announced a series of updates to the game that will be rolled out in phases over the next two seasons. These updates are designed to honour the league’s traditions while modernizing the game for today’s players and fans.

Effective in 2026:

  • Modified rouge: no point for missed field goals wide of the uprights or kicks out of the end zone untouched; point still awarded if a returner is tackled or kneels in the end zone.
  • Team bench locations: Team benches move to opposite sidelines.
  • Automatic play clock: New 35-second play clock starts as soon as the previous play is whistled dead.

Effective in 2027:

  • Goalpost location: Goalposts moved to the back of the end zone.
  • Field size: Field length reduced to 100 yards (from 110) from goal line to goal line.
  • End zone size: End zones shortened to 15 yards (from 20) to make all endzones uniform across the league.
