The Hamilton Tiger-Cats put on a gritty performance on Saturday afternoon, taking a late lead into the final minute before a late touchdown from Dedrick Mills helped the Calgary Stampeders edge out a 28-23 win. Quarterback Tre Ford delivered another electric performance, powering the Ticats with 212 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and an impressive 80 yards on the ground in his second consecutive start.
Hamilton dominated the early play as Ford struck quick in the opening quarter, connecting on a massive 51-yard touchdown bomb to Myron Mitchell to give the Ticats a 7-3 lead. Marc Liegghio stayed locked in all afternoon, nailing field goals from 37 and 38 yards to ensure Hamilton controlled the scoreboard for almost the entire first half. Calgary managed a late score before the break to take a thin 16-13 advantage into the locker room.
The Black and Gold came out swinging in the third quarter. After the Ticats defense forced pressure, defensive tackle Charbel Dabire made a high-IQ play by snatching a deflected pass for a huge interception to put Hamilton’s offence right back on the attack. The Ticats immediately made them pay, as Ford fired a crisp 14-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Lawler to retake a 20-16 lead.
Hamilton’s defense completely blanked Calgary in the third quarter. In the fourth frame, Liegghio drilled his third field goal of the day to extend the advantage to 23-19. The Ticats held strong past the three-minute warning clinging to a 23-22 lead, but Calgary managed to break loose on a final possession with a 49-yard score with 38 seconds remaining. With just seconds on the clock, the visiting Tiger-Cats were unable to find a miracle touchdown of their own on their final drive.
